Log Haulers / Lowboy Drivers
by Darlene Jump-Rauthe
The drivers of these rigs are my Heroes !!! They deliver their cargo, either logs or equipment, under the most challenging conditions imaginable Winter, I suspect, presents the most problems with slippery roads, hills turning into icy, slippery slides, curves mid-hill, chains, reduced vision at times, crowded, slippery hiways, people that do not realize that a truck hauling 27 to above 60 tons cannot stop on a dime when they pull out in front of one !!!
Summer presents its' own special problems with added traffic on the roads, dust, mud, tourists, and bicyclers, to mention a few.
I admire their ability to drive the big rigs on roads that would give most people heart-failure; steep mountain-side roads with sheer drop-offs, switch-backs with quick turns and twisting, winding, narrow, rough, primitive roads are just a few of the challenges dealt with on a daily basis.
I've been in the passenger seat several times over the years, and with each trip, my admiration for these "Heroes of the Road" has increased; especially when I looked out the side window to see down a steep mountainside to a valley so far below.
Yes, log truck drivers are my heroes and very much respected and admired. They are, indeed, a very special breed !!!
