Human Factors Cause Accidents

It is estimated that 80 to 90 percent of all accidents in the home, on the road, or on the job are caused by human factors. Following arc the top 10 human factors that cause accidents.

Negligence or judgmental error. This is where a person fails to observe safety rules, follow instructions or maintain equipment he/she uses.

Emotional anger or temper. This is where a person becomes irrational and upset over something and disregards not only others safety, but themselves as well.

Hasty decision making. This is where a person acts to do something before thinking and takes unsafe short cuts.

Indifference. This is where a person lacks attention to the task at hand and is not alert (day dreaming, fatigued, etc.).

Distractions. This is where a person allows interruptions by others while performing critical tasks. The person has family troubles, money problems, etc. and mentally thinks about these troubles.

Curiosity risk taking. This is where a person becomes curious to do something different just to see what happens.

Inadequate instructions. This is where a person is not given training or is not given proper instructions on performing a task or function.

Poor work habits. This is where a person is disorganized, unkempt and takes a nonchalant approach to neatness, and orderliness.

Over confidence. This is where a person is cocky, takes chances and exhibits "macho" behavior "a know it all".

Lack of planning. This is where a person has no plans nor "plans ahead".

Knowing these human factors that cause accidents and checking yourself on each of these can help you from being involved in an accident at home, in your car, or on your job. Remember, safety is no accident.
